When You Feel Distant From God: How to Remain in Christ

There may be times when you still want God, but you don't feel close to Him.

You pray, but it feels difficult. You open Scripture, but your attention drifts. What once felt meaningful may now feel quiet or dry.

When that happens, it's easy to think something must be wrong or that you need to work harder to feel close to God again.

Jesus says:

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

— John 15:4–5

What Jesus Means by Remain

In this passage, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine and His followers as the branches.

A branch depends on the vine for life. It cannot grow or produce fruit by itself.

Later in this passage, Jesus shows that remaining in Him is a relationship of love that shapes how His followers live:

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.”

— John 15:9–10

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

— John 15:12

Remaining in Christ means receiving His love, continuing in relationship with Him, living by what He teaches, and letting His love shape how you treat others.

That relationship does not depend on maintaining a certain spiritual feeling. You can remain in Christ even when you do not feel especially close to God.

Don't Let the Feeling Decide What Is True

Feeling distant from God is real, but the feeling itself does not tell you why you feel that way.

Stress, grief, exhaustion, distraction, or a difficult season can affect your emotions and concentration.

At other times, there may be something Scripture clearly teaches that you know you are resisting or refusing to do.

Those are different situations.

Before deciding that something is wrong simply because you feel distant, ask:

Is there something I already know God's Word is calling me to change?

If there is, admit it honestly to God, ask His forgiveness, and turn from what you know is wrong, depending on Christ to help you obey His Word.

If there isn't, don't keep searching for hidden failure just because you don't feel especially close to God.

You do not need to create guilt that Scripture has not given you.

Stay With Christ Even When It Feels Quiet

Even when the season feels quiet, stay with Christ. Keep praying honestly about what you are carrying and live by what He has made clear in His Word.

You may not feel especially close to God right away. Remaining means continuing with Him without trying to force that feeling to change.

A Prayer for When You Feel Distant From God

Heavenly Father,

You know when we want to be close to You but don't feel that closeness.

Help us not to let our feelings decide what is true.

Show us through Your Word if there is something we need to admit and change. If there isn't, keep us from creating guilt that You have not given us.

Help us keep trusting Christ and living by what You teach, even when this season feels quiet.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
