When You’re Exhausted, Start With Scripture — Not Trying Harder
Updated: Oct 4
When you’re exhausted, it is easy to believe the answer is to try harder, think faster, fix more, or keep pushing until everything is handled.
In Matthew 11, Jesus gives us another way to respond:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28–30

Come as You Are
Jesus invites people who are already weary and burdened. You do not have to arrive stronger or get everything together before coming to Him.
He is gentle and humble in heart. You can tell Him what is weighing on you, even if all you can say is, “Lord, I am exhausted. I need Your help.”
He is where you begin, and He does not leave you there. Keep coming to Him, talking with Him honestly.
Let His Word Guide You
Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” His yoke means living under His teaching and learning His gentle, humble way.
You do not have to sort through your whole life at once. Bring one concern at a time to Jesus in prayer.
Then open His Word. If you do not know where to begin, start with today’s passage and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what Jesus is teaching you here.
Ask:
What is Jesus teaching me in this passage that can guide my responses today?
Then do what this passage makes clear, asking Him to help you live it out. You are not doing this to earn His care; you are responding to the grace He has already given you in Christ.
If you are exhausted from caring for someone, for example, loving them may include asking another person to help with a meal. Following Jesus does not require you to pretend you have no limits.
You do not have to know how everything will turn out in order to follow what He has already taught.
Receive His Rest
Jesus promises rest for your soul even while life is still difficult.
His rest does not depend on everything changing first. Christ remains with you through the Holy Spirit, and His Word continues to guide you whatever happens with your circumstances.
As you stay with Him, He continues His work in you. He renews the way you think, teaches you how to respond, strengthens your trust, and forms you to live more faithfully under His care.
You may still be tired. But you are not facing what is before you alone or the same way you were before. You are walking through it with Christ, under His care.
A Prayer for When You’re Exhausted
Heavenly Father,
You know how tired we are and what we are carrying. Help us come to Jesus as we are, with whatever we are facing.
Let Your Word guide our responses today. Help us keep returning to Jesus, depend on You for what we need, and receive the rest He gives even when our circumstances remain difficult.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
There is a Scripture for That.
